Punisher Season 3: Why It Never Happened + Possible Reboot

Punisher Season 3, will it happen?

One of the most widely recognized and discussed characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe is the Punisher. This individual takes the law into their own hands and operates as a vigilante, despite the potential consequences of their actions.

Taking justice into his own hands without any major superpowers, Frank Castle, aka the Punisher, lives in a world of darkness and torment.

The Netflix, starring Jon Bernthal as the lead, follows the Punisher who eliminates the people responsible for his family’s death and becomes a vigilante.

While seeking revenge, he reveals the truth of a prominent New York conspiracy that involves the CIA.

Punisher season 1 and 2 was a relative success; however, when fans hoped for a third installment, Netflix announced its cancellation.

Why did Netflix cancel the series, and is there any possible reboot in the future in the form of Punisher Season 3?

To find out the answers to all such questions, we bring you all the latest news and updates on Punisher Season 3.

Punisher season one aired premiered on 17th November 2017 for 13 episodes, and the sequel aired on 18th January 2019 for 13 episodes.

Punisher Season 3Yet to be Announced

On the 18th of February, 2019, Netflix made an official announcement stating that the Punisher television series would not be renewed for a third season.

According to a report from Deadline, Netflix said that “Showrunner Steve Lightfoot, the talented crew, and the exceptional cast, which included star Jon Bernthal, delivered a highly acclaimed and compelling series for fans, and we are proud to showcase their work on Netflix for years to come.”

The cancellation was met with dismay from many fans, who were surprised as to why the series was brought to an abrupt end.

If speculations are to be believed, Netflix s’ relationship with Marvel has been souring down, which started with the former canceling flagship show Daredevil.

Marvel shows are very expensive to produce, and the streaming numbers weren’t good enough to warrant a renewal.

The viewership of the television series Punisher has exhibited a consistent decline since its inaugural season, with a limited number of dedicated Marvel enthusiasts regularly tuning in by the time of the second season’s premiere.

Despite the relative popularity, Punisher was overtaken in viewing figures by Daredevil in January 2019.

Marvel still needs to crack the code of pulling numbers for individual superhero series as they do for the big cinema films.

Additionally, Netflix partnered a deal in 2013 to improve their streaming library; however, as of writing, the streamer is more than capable of adapting any Marvel comics.

The streaming giant is planning to build an entire universe on Millarworld, indicating it simply does not need Marvel anymore.

On 7th March 2023, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that the Punisher will feature in Marvel Studio s’ Daredevil: Born Again on Disney+ in Spring 2024.

The actor’s unwavering dedication to the role of Punisher has been highly esteemed by his fan base. He has been commended for his exceptional ability to embody the character of Jon and bring his story to life on the screen.

During an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, actor Jon Bernthal professed a deep emotional attachment to a character he had portrayed on screen. He expressed that the character had become an integral part of his psyche, stating, “He is really in my heart, man. He is really in my bones.

I am enormously protective of that character.” Bernthal expounded on the significance of the character by drawing an analogy to his own familial relationships. He emphasized his willingness to make sacrifices for his loved ones, just as his character did in the show.

It appears that Bernthal’s emotional connection with the character was founded on a profound understanding of the character’s motivations and experiences.
